June 2022 Meeting

Hightown Writers’ Workshop 26 June 2022

Venue: Peepos in the Spirit Room

The meeting was a little depleted because only Liz and I were there!  Marie, Martin, Kath and Sue gave apologies, and Adam, who is always reliable in attending, did not appear so we decided he must be on holiday. Paul and Stuart didn’t make it nor did Andy – but when he begins a new job closer to home we hope he will be able to join us again. It is hard to come along after a long day’s work and travelling – something we need to think some more about.

It wasn’t an ordinary meeting because we didn’t do a writing exercise because two people did not seem a viable number. That may have been an excuse but instead, we discussed the future of the group, topics for homework and the pleasurable anticipation of having two new members next month.

Subject for homework was to randomly choose a book, find the 3rd chapter, 3rd page and 3rd line on that page and use it to begin a piece of writing.

Liz had chosen her novel: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the sentence was

‘We sat late. We could not tear ourselves away from each other, nor persuade each other to say the word ‘Farewell’……………..’

Liz hopes to create a piece of writing using this as a beginning. We look forward to it!

Jennie used a sentence from Anna of the Five Towns by Arnold Bennett

When he had arranged the correspondence in a flattened pile, he put on his steel rimmed spectacles and began to read…………

Jennie tells the story of a young man, Jo, purchasing a painting by his favourite artist Fred Ellwell a deceased and talented East Yorkshire artist. Jo’s grandad has left him a small inheritance and he wants to buy something to remember him by. When he meets the vendor, Oswald Hamilton, a friendly elderly retired farmer, a discussion begins on the ancestry of the artist, the richness of East Yorkshire in archaeological remains, and an encounter with someone from Jo’s past. There may be another instalment!

The subject for homework next month is to expand on this statement from Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and create a piece of writing:

‘All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way’

Take an imaginary family or a real one

The next meeting is 26 July 2022

Time: 7.30

Venue: Peepos in the High Street, Bridgnorth

Hope to see you next time,

Jennie
