Out of Sync 2020 by Kath Norgrove - responding to Hightown Writers' 'new words' challenge

Already weird light beams had appeared over the horizon and were visible for an hour, each morning, in what seemed to be a second sunset, then a star in a galaxy 75 million light years away disappeared.

Nevertheless, the perspicacious scientist quickly discerned the cause of the strange ring of fire. It was an odd solar eclipse caused by the moon, an appurtenance of the Earth, moving in front of the sun. She had tried to extrapolate the future date and time of the next eclipse by looking at data from previous ones, but trepidatiously and apprehensively realised that this one hadn't been predicted.

Something was out of sync, a bit like the whole of 2020, really.
