Can We Save Our Planet by Jennie Hart

Our Environment: thoughts from Hightown Writers

The ocean is teaming with trillions of grains

Of plastic from takeaway trays,

Bottles and wrappings, egg boxes and straws,

Fragmenting, polluting in dangerous ways

H2 and carbon are linked into chains

Then chemical additives woven

Into the melee to make all the trash

That clogs up the seas it is proven

Microplastics are added to toothpastes

And cosmetic products we use,

With intent they are added to whiten our smiles

And rid us of wrinkles we all want to lose

Nanoplastics are even more deadly

Ingested by all marine creatures

Microscopic they enter the food chain,

In our food and our water they reach us

The source of much plastic is synthetic fibres

From everyday life's wear and tear,

Waste water from washers polluting the oceans

With microsized fibres from fleece and sportswear

It's not just the plastics but other pollutants

Attach to the plastic. Free ride!

Pesticides,metals, industrial chemicals

Down rivers and valleys to the oceans they slide

It's a frightening scene on our planet

Barely time to find a solution,

Choose natural fibes like cotton and wool

Stop micro- and nano-pollution!
