Discovery by John Bowler

In the beginning God created the world and humans to seek

Different languages emerged with the power to speak.

Love makes the world go round they say

But discovery must be its closest companion along the way.

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue

To discover America in 1492.

Australia was found by Captain Cook

Many strange creatures were recorded in his book.

Issac Newton had a light bulb moment when an apple fell upon his head

Gravitational forces explain a lot, it has to be said.

Medical science advances every day

Helping Doctors and Nurses in every way.

William Harvey explained the circulation of the blood

So that could be written down and understood.

Allcock and Brown pioneered the first flight

Today the Red Arrows provide a thrilling sight.

Discoveries also can be small

A baby thrills us all when first steps change from a crawl.

These are just a few of many amazing things to see,

Without discovery where would we be?

This must have been one of John's last poems. He was always looking to the future, positively - I wonder what he'd have written about the past 12 months of the pandemic: "Without discovery where would we be?" Indeed.x

I love this. If John had been my teacher at school I'm sure I would have taken more notice in History classes.
