They called me EMO by Elizabeth Obadina

credit: Wallpaper House

Everyone always shortened my name

To Bibby or Lizzy or Liz,

But never Bessie or Betty or Beth

Though all come from Elizabeth: all are just the same.

Mother of God, my Granny’s middle name,

Saints, and sinners, one and all, to Mary they claim,

But I felt it was middling, mediocre and mild

A name doled out to an un-exciting child.

Obadina. Now, that’s different and comes from afar

From the Nigerian people called the Yoruba.

Oba means a king.

Dina means lives nearby.

But thanks to that ‘O’ my name became by and by

Miss EMO! Ms EMO!!

Haha - EMO - Haha … I would sigh.
