September 2021 Meeting

Equinox Sunset over Bridgnorth by Jennie Hart

 Hightown Writer's Workshop Meeting

Tuesday 26 September 2021 at 7.30pm at The Shakespeare Inn

Apologies: Sue, Martin, Marie, Jennie and ‘Zoom’ hitches prevented Kath and Andy from joining in.

Liz and Adam held the HTW fort on a VERY rainy evening. It was our first return to public meeting places and despite some advertising and a few people showing interest there were no new faces, just old guard survivors! Still we soldiered on.

We warmed up by doing the exercise set by the Monday poetry group (meets in the library at 2.30pm the first Monday of every month if anyone is interested in joining). Their theme for September writing is ‘No Escape’. Adam sketched out a not so improbable conflict in the Pacific in which a boat was sunk by the naval fleet of a large – unnamed – Far Eastern nation and its skipper survived on a small Pacific desert island from which there was no escape. Liz wrote an acrostic poem about the Covid vaccine refusers.

We then read each others’ writing on the theme of Equinox and looked forward to reading Jennie’s, Andy’s and Kath’s promised pieces. We loved the fluidity of Adam’s beautiful depiction of sunlight in motion and he commented that the accompanying picture of the sun rising over Castle Walk captured his Ecliptic Equinox imagery perfectly. We then read Liz’s science-fiction story Equinox Rebalancing – a parable for our times and Adam said it had a ‘Clash of the Titans’ feel about it whilst Liz felt that Douglas Adams was a bigger influence. Our discussion inspired a long chat about science fiction and space travel and all things futuristic – a genre which we both love. Adam then read two science fiction stories he had brought along to share with us; both inspired by the Voyager Space Probe Mission, which Adam confessed was older than him, being launched in September 1977, and that made Liz feel VERY old! Both stories ‘The Golden Disc’ and its sequel, ‘The Redundant Nomad’, will be appearing soon on the blog spot.

We booked the Function Room for the next meeting and will be putting a notice on the Community noticeboard in The Shakespeare about us and our meetings. Perhaps it might generate some new members.

Next meeting: Tuesday 26th October, at 7.30pm. Venue TBC.

Writing theme: The Closed Door
