The Sleepy Season by Adam Rutter

credit Josephine Knudsen

The days are getting dark,

The fallen leaves cover the park,

The autumn colours are here;

This is the most colourful time of the year.

Hedgehogs and dormice hibernate,

Woodlands and tourist sites

Are in a dormant state.

Autumn makes me feel sleepy.

The dark nights are a bit creepy,

The gales are howling

River rapids flowing

Life in the town slowing

Down.

Autumn puts the garden to bed

And crocuses blossom in the flower bed.

Brilliant title, Adam. I'm not sure which I prefer: "The sleepy season" or "Charred autumn"... They're both great. The imagery in this poem certainly encompasses autumn. A well-paced piece with a solid final couplet.

Like " Autumn puts the garden to bed" and the idea of the "dormant state."
