A Vegetarian Celebration by Jennie Hart

(To the tune ofSaw Three Ships)

Chickens, turkeys! Celebrate!

On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day!

The festive Nut roast’s on our plate

On Christmas Day in the morning.

No sausages or roasted goose,

On Christmas day on Christmas Day!

It’s time to let the livestock loose

On Christmas Day in the morning

Chestnuts are wafting in the air,

On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day!

Oh, let us taste this wondrous fare

On Christmas Day in the morning

No danger now for cows or pigs,

On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day!

We’re feasting now on dates and figs

On Christmas Day in the morning.

It’s Christmas party time again,

On Christmas day, on Christmas Day!

No fun for lamb or duck or hen

On Christmas Day in the morning.

But aubergines with parmesan,

On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day!

Wake up the taste buds more than ham

On Christmas Day in the morning.

To feed the world there’s not enough,

On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day.

Hungry people sleeping rough

On Christmas Day in the morning.

So my friends eat only crops,

On Christmas Day, on Christmas day!

And drink red wine! World hunger stops!

On Christmas Day in the morning.

A lovely ditty, Jennie; not sure what the relevance of red wine is, though... Good for the heart...? Aubergines with parmesan sound very tasty -- I need to get some recipes off you! :)

I can share my recipes any time.
I think the relevance of red wine is that hopefully, nothing except the exploited black grape had to die to create it. Or maybe it just fitted the rhyme?!
Thank you Alex for your always welcome comments. I believe the 2 songs posted this week were written in 2015 or 2016

Grapes are overly exploited; each year, many of them are squeezed into tasty beverages.

Blimey, you wrote those two pieces ages ago, then! Nice to see them appear on the blog; I can see that the one was originally posted in 2020. I think you should write another.

Merry Christmas!
