Tulipomania by Val Pedrick

fleshy brown bulb

tight tunic sheath

palmed gently into

winter’s womb slumber

spring green emerging

curved leaves enfold

stem snakes erect

viperish bed swells

fluted flower bells, but

no bud case bursts,

no calix collars

tulip’s smooth throat

petal folds flush

green goblet fills

pumping pink pigment

to pert petal tips

red satin petals

pout to reveal

silky black stamens

pulchritudinous pistil

red satin hearts

shed bloody tears

bared capsule bears

seventh-year seed

seventeenth century

‘Tulipomania’ –

six million pounds

for one tulip bulb

twenty-first century

fantasising gardener

mad about tulips

has ‘Tulipomania’?

One of my favourite Val poems with such lovely imagery and alliterative phrases - erotic too, ‘pumping pink pigments / to pert petal tips’ !

This is powerful, beautiful stuff. 😮💓A knowledge of botany expressed so creatively, very poetic. I'm glad you still share Val's work, very special to honour her memory that way.

For some reason, I'm able to post only short comments.

Very poetic, Val -- I've learnt two new words!

Beautiful description of the tulip bulb and its tunic sheath. Wonderful capturing of the breath-taking hues of tulips flowers too. I miss Val so much.
