Jeans (a Symbol of Western Imperialism?) by Adam Rutter

If you’re thinking of growing kidney beans,

Make sure you blur Alan Titchmarsh’s jeans

If you want to keep healthy relations with North Korea,

Then have no fear

The Koreans have blurred Alan Titchmarsh's jeans.

His jeans,

Seen as Western imperialism

Is the point of view to Korean communism.

If the Koreans want to see Alan get his clothes dirty,

Why does the communist government get shirty?

Why blur his jeans?

It seems anti-Westernisation is coming off at the seams

Secret Gardens is shown on Korean television

Communist government give viewers a communist vision

How North Korea obtained Secret Gardens

Is not known

However a BBC recording entered a communist state

Is still been shown.

If you’re thinking of taking a holiday in North Korea

Wear a pair of jeans

Have no fear

It won’t cause a scene.

I wrote this poem because I decided to write about a topic that I do not normally include in my writing, thereby I decided to add mystery for the “blind reading”. I attended the blind reading at Bridgnorth Writers Group in April 2024, which involved writing a short story/poem, and everybody had to guess who wrote it. The story/poem could either be written by a published author (or, in my case), someone in the group. As far as I am aware, only one member of BWG guessed it was me who wrote this poem.

Nothing about Communism surprises me ... don't get me started 😆 I reckon the book "1984" got it exactly right!
That's really interesting about the blind reading 🙂
