A Rat's Tale by Fiona Carstairs

I ran along the main road that day!

Usually I took to field and by lane

But some intuition or inner voice

Spoke strongly to me on the way

And I with unacustomed choice

Followed; although I thought it insane

Traffic with thoughtless speed lumbered by

And the already windy way was strewn

With newly formed leaves, let fly

By trees as they rustled their disdain

And hedges newly shorn

Gave up birds hiding places

Suddenly a fox apeared from the  bank

And sat in my path his ears were

Velvet and amber was his flank

His brush glowing and wavey

He looked at me with delight!

and I looked back at him with fright

Then with golden liquid sound

He spoke! “Happy Easter”Mr Rat

Well I was overwhelmed

I never expected that!

“Easter greeting to you too”

I said - going for broke.
