January's Workshop 20 Minute Warm-up Writing - Light by Ann Reader

Horse in Gaza - credit nbc news

The blast from the explosion* was blinding, the light so bright it lit up the snow on the distant mountains. It wasn’t until daylight that we saw the extent of the damage, our minds blank with the horror.

Gaza was once a quiet, peaceful place, but not for many years now. I wish I could time-travel back to then with my family. Now I just look at the destruction: The tree in our yard is uprooted.  The tricycle my little brother had for his birthday is a mangled wreck. Even the cups in the kitchen are smashed.

The horse we once had has disappeared probably terrified by the sound and the light. Our dog ever faithful is still with us.  I hold his collar and share with him the green blanket my father passes to me.

There is devastation everywhere, this is one time I did not relish the light of day. Then in the growing light of dawn a single flower the shade of a daffodil gave me hope.
